Myanmar junta rejects Suu Kyi detention appeal

Yangon (ANTARA/Reuters) - Myanmar`s junta has rejected a legal appeal for the release of detained opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi, whose latest house arrest is due to expire on May 27, her party said on Tuesday.

Lawyers for Suu Kyi, the Nobel Peace laureate who has spent more than 13 of the past 19 years under some form of detention, were told of the regime`s decision last week, Nyan Win of the National League for Democracy (NLD) said.

Suu Kyi`s latest detention began on May 30, 2003 under Section 10 (B) of the Law Safeguarding the State from the Dangers of Subversive Elements.

The law allows for a detention of five consecutive years before the accused must be freed or put on trial.

When the regime extended Suu Kyi`s house arrest last year in an apparent violation of the law, her lawyers filed an appeal.

"Since the appeal was the last resort allowed under that law, we will have to explore other avenues to work for her release," Nyan Win said. A commentary in a state-owned newspaper several months ago said the law allowed for detentions of up to six years.

The U.N. Working Group on Arbitrary Detention has ruled that the 63-year-old Suu Kyi`s confinement in her Yangon home is illegal under Myanmar law.

But analysts say it is unlikely the military, which has ruled the former Burma for more than four decades and refused to recognize the NLD`s 1990 landslide election victory, will release her anytime soon.

The generals have vowed to press ahead with a seven-step "roadmap to democracy" that should culminate in multi-party elections in 2010, as a replacement to the absolute power wielded by the army since a 1962 coup.

The NLD and Western governments dismiss the roadmap and the army-drafted constitution as a blueprint for the generals cementing their grip on power. (*)

Draft presidential decree ready for

Antasari`s temporary dismissal

Jakarta (ANTARA News) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has made a draft presidential decree ready to be signed for temporary dismissal of chairman of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK), Antasari Azhar.

The presidential special staff for legal affairs, Denny Indrayana, said here on Tuesday the signing of the draft was just waiting for an official letter from the police declaring Antasari as a suspect.

"The presidential decree is already drafted and will be issued soon after the letter from the police, now still being prepared, is received by the president," he said.

Denny said President Yudhoyono had received a letter from the KPK leadership on May 5 asking him to issue a presidential decree to temporarily dismiss Antasari in connection with his status as a suspect in the murder of company director Nasrudin Zulkarnaen.

He said the issuance of the presidential decree would be based on three bases namely Article 32 of Law Number 30 of 2002 on KPK, official letter from the police declaring Antasari as a suspect and official request on May 5, 2009 from the KPK leadership.

Denny said the issuance of the decree would be done soon after the President received a letter from the police.

"A quick process is needed to separate Antasari`s legal process from the KPK and to save the KPK and its corruption eradication agenda," he said.

After being interrogated on May 4 by the police Antasari was immediately declared as a suspect and held at the police`s detention center.

Antasari was charged with violating Article 340 of the Criminal Code on premeditated murder carrying a maximum penalty of death.

Antasari, a former public prosecutor, has been suspended from all his duties as KPK chairman at a KPK leadership meeting on May 1, 2009. (*)

Kalla reveals why he broke with

Yudhoyono

Makasar (ANTARA News) - Golkar Party Chairman Jusuf Kalla here Saturday disclosed some of the political communication he conducted with President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono before he decided to part with the Democratic Party for the presidential race.

"As many as three times, I told President Yudhoyono that Golkar still wanted to remain a partner, but every time the answer was yes, we will be together, no clear answer. If it`s yes, then say yes. If it`s no, then say no. So it meant, well, let us just part. Golkar is not begging for any position," Kalla said.

Speaking at a get-together with the leaders of Golkar Party`s district-level branches in South Sulawesi, Kalla said Yudhoyono eventually forwarded certain conditions for a coalition between his party and Golkar which in effect rejected him (Kalla).

"Yudhoyono even set certain conditions. I had been serving as his vice president, still he set conditions. This was just a way to say no , meaning there was no sincerity. We, Golkar, felt our self-respect was compromised," Kalla said.

"Because we felt we were being belittled, Golkar eventually decided to seperate from the Demoratic Party," he said.

Kalla also said he was now facing many obstacles posed by people within as well as outside the Golkar Party in his bid to run for president.

"Certain elements in the party claiming to represent Golkar`s 320 district branches are against my bid. But when I checked, they only proved to represent themselves, somebody paid them. I ordered the police to arrest those people who misused the party`s name," Kalla said.

He said to become a great party, Golkar must be prepared to either win the elections or become an opposition party. "Right now, many Golkar members already feel defeated even before taking up the cudgels,` he said.(*)

WHO stops use of term "swine flu"

Geneva (ANTARA News/Xinhua/OANA) - The World Health Organization (WHO) announced on Thursday that it would no longer use the term "swine flu" to refer to the current outbreak. Instead, it would refer to the new influenza virus as "influenza A (H1N1)".

"From today (April 30), WHO will refer to the new influenza virus as influenza A (H1N1)," the UN agency said in a short notice posted on its website.

The WHO has repeatedly stressed that people cannot be infected by this new virus through consumption of well-cooked pork or exposure to pigs.

"Even though the virus originated in pigs, we do not believe that people are getting infected by pigs," said Keiji Fukuda, the WHO`s assistant director-general ad interim for health security and environment.

"This is really a virus that is being transmitted from person to person. Therefore, we think that with food-handling practices, the eating of pork meat does not pose a danger to people," Fukuda told reporters. (*)

Kalla-Wiranto pair  to win presidential election

FOTO ANTARA/Saptono
Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Vice Secretary General of Golkar party`s executive board Iskandar Mandji admitted he was optimistic that Kalla-Wiranto pair would be able to win the upcoming presidential election in July, this year.

"I am sure this pair will be able to achieve victory in the election," he said at his party`s office in Slipi, Jakarta, on Friday.

Iskandar made the statement on the sidelines of the Kalla-Wiranto declaration which was previously reported to find difficulty in picking Kalla`s running mate for the upcoming presidential election.

Asked about the reason why Golkar picked Wiranto as Kalla`s running mate, Iskandar said at least there was a similarity in chemistry.

"And besides, both Golkar and the People`s Conscience Party (Hanura) give priority to the interest of the nation," he said.

In addition, he added, there was also similarity in platform particularly in building the nationbal economy. (*)

Ketika...

pada malam
ku telisik jejak waktu, berharap padanya ada-Mu
lalu malam lelah cipta hening, menerawang langit
sementara di tingginya bulan merah semburat
bertengger anggun pada kaki-kaki awan

rindu pada-Mu
buah rindu darinya

pada fajar
di antara sepertiganya malam
luluh lantak segala mua...

ku tanggalkan ingin...
kunistakan nafsu
ku sucikan dengan air wudhu'...

setelah kau mohonkan untuk ku pada-Nya

Perempuan Embun Pagi Hari

Perempuan

Embun pagi hari

Jernihnya murni, bertengger di dedaunan pagi sebelum di hempas matahari

Bukan lenyap.....

lepas di angkasa

Menjelma embun lain, di pagi yang lain

Aku menungguimu datang

Ku nikmati sorga

Lalu ku urai tuba jadi susu

Perempuan

Embun pagi hari

dari hati yang resah

ini hanya bualan, bualan hati gelisah

Yogya, 3, 007

IMAJI Tumpah……

Aku terpekur olehmu ilalang

Seperti merajut cahaya di gulita

Aku terantuk indahmu rembulan

Lelahkan hati, tenggelam dalam rindu

Aku ciptakan sedikit sajak

Yang ku ramu dalam mabukku padamu

Aku pilihkan satu dua kata terindah

Hanya untukmu

tiba-tiba

aku abadikan, aku tuliskan di hati

ku pajang dia seperti baju-baju ku yang mulai melepuh diterkam usia

betapa indah…

betapa ini anugerah…

betapa ini…
